Plot Synopsis : Dae-Woo is an English Literature Professor, that has never had a girlfriend before, even though he is 30 years old. With the urging of his best friend, he finally gets the courage to ask out a lady that just moved into his apartment complex named Mi-Na. Being somewhat of a perfectionist, Dae-Woo plans out everything, including the lines that he will tell her on their first date. Although his prepared lines were highly ineffectual when he spoke them during their first date, the couple did somehow click and quickly became boyfriend & girlfriend. Mina explains to Dae-Woo that she is an art major and plans to eventually go to Italy to study. She shares her apartment with roommate Jang-Mi who speaks a little more coarse than she does and hangs out with shadier people. As Dae-Woo & Mina’s relationship progresses, strange things start to occur that should give Dae-Woo some warning signals about Mi-Na; he finds a naked guy in her bathroom…that turns out to be an ex boyfriend, he meets a rough hoodlum kind of guy that turns out to be the boyfriend of her roommate Jang-Mi, there is a huge kimchi refrigerator in her apartment that doesn’t have any kimchi, and when Dae-woo takes Mi-Na to a dinner with his friends…Mi-Na professes that she doesn’t know who Dostoyevksi is, although she has read the works of famous painters Kandinski and Mondrian. Dae-Woo eventually hires a private investigator to find out about Mi-Na’s mysterious past and must then confront the answers that he did not expect.
Movie Review : My Scary Girl doesn’t have any relation to the popular Korean film called “My Sassy Girl.” The title was probably picked to compare and contrast the sweet innocent type of girl shown in My Sassy Girl against the far darker background of the female lead in My Scary Girl (as well as help sell a few more dvd copies in the international marketplace). Although My Scary Girl starts out as a Romantic Comedy of sorts, the film soon starts taking bits of Takashi Ishii “Freeze Me,” and turns into a rather suspenseful little thriller, but eventually resorts back to a Romantic Comedy by the time the film ends. My Scary Girl was shot with HD equipment, with a relatively modest budget and had no A-list actors. The results were that My Scary Girl became one of the highest grossing films in Korea for this year and one of the best films of the year in terms of quality. There are a lot of positives about My Scary Girl. The first would have to be the acting of Yong-Woo Park who played the naive Dae-Woo. He played his character in such a impressive manner, that at times I felt a little bit awestruck watching his performance. Kang-hee Choi, who played Mi-Na, wasn’t quite as eye catching with her performance, but the neutral manner in which she played her character was highly appreciated. The script was equally as impressive, having some really clever dialogue, along with its many twists and turns and even the ending turned out differently than I expected. Without giving away to much of the surprises to be found in My Scary Girl, I will say that once the background of Mi-Na is given, the film takes on the atmosphere of a pretty cool thriller (think Takashi Ishii “Freeze Me”). Definitely one of the best films to come out of Korea in 2006 and should be checked out.
